Important Update on Poultry Keeping Legislation – Action required
We wanted to inform you about some important changes to the legislation regarding the registration of poultry, which may affect you as Organic Feed Customers.
Under the new legislation, all bird keepers-regardless of the size of their flock-are now required to officially register their birds. Previously, this was only mandatory for those keeping 50 or more poultry. By registering, you will receive vital updates, such as information on local avian disease outbreaks and biosecurity measures to help safeguard your flock.
This change is part of a broader effort to manage and mitigate potential disease outbreaks, such as avian influenza and Newcastle disease, and to limit their spread.
Key dates:
- The deadline for registration in England and Wales is 1st October 2024
- The deadline for Scotland was 1st September 2024
To register your flock, please follow this link: Register Here
Once registered, you are required to inform the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) within one month if:
- You no longer keep or own birds
- Your contact information changes
- The species of poultry or captive birds you keep changes
- The purpose for keeping your birds changes
- You begin keeping 50 or more poultry or other captive birds
Note: You do not need to inform APHA if the number or birds you keep fluctuates between 1 and 49, as long as they are the same species. However, if you register hens and later add a different species, such as ducks, you will need to inform APHA.
